Dear Fanloons:

There are cities in Japan besides Tokyo.

There are cities in the UK besides London. And, yes, these cities are quite modern. None, as far as I know, are fifteenth-century fiefdoms to this day.

Just so you know. I'm tired of having every fake English Sue come from London, London, London. What about Liverpool, or Newcastle, or Birmingham? Spice it up a little bit! And London has several little boroughs and districts, am I right? Which one did she come from? How has this affected her growing up? Background, please, besides "I thought it'd be cool if my Sue OC had an English accent, lolz!"

Regards,

Leiko

if they're not hating on her, they're screwing up her name

Every FF8 character has had their name misspelled at least once, but this one seems to happen most. That said...

SIGH.

Rinoa. Okay? R-I-N-O-A. Not "Riona".

I can understand a typo here and there; the "N" and "O" are easy to mix up if you're typing too fast. And it's not by any stretch of the imagination a common name ("Riona" is a real name though, I believe, but still >:|), so spellcheck isn't going to pick it up. But doing it consistently like it's really her name? plz gtfo. :(

This also applies to her last name. It's Heartilly, not Heartily. Yes, the developers made her surname similar to the word "heartily" because it reflects her personality, but it's not her last name.

Okay, I'm probably one of five people in the world who even cares about this, but.

A few notes on Blueno:

1) Not stupid. Plays stupid on missions, but really is actually not. Even if you completely ignore everything about his actual characterization (of which there isn't much, I admit it), he's in Cipher Pol 9. He's an elite government-hired assassin. You have to be smart for that shit.

2) Probably not interested in fucking fourteen-year-old boys. You could make a case for it, I guess, but...just like, randomly wanting to screw a little boy? I don't buy it.

3) At no point would he have thought Lucci was "too scrawny" to be a CP9 agent. This is a kid who busted up five hundred trained soldiers and an unspecified but great amount of heavily armed pirates at age thirteen. If your story is taking place after this, and the one I'm talking about does...see 1. Blueno fucking knows better.

Also, Lucci doesn't blush.

Okay, I just had to say that.

ETA: Oh, and for the record, just because you have sex with a person a lot doesn't mean you automatically start to care for them. Maybe if you also, you know, actually get to know them, but if it's just the sex...there's no reason for you to just randomly fall in love with them.

i know i can be a little stubborn sometimes

So on a scale of Limbo to Cocytus, how badly am I going to hell if I skip church tomorrow to watch the Wimbledon final?

Because, um, I am. It's not my fault Britain is five hours ahead of us and the match starts at 9AM here. It's also not my fault that Federer and Nadal are so hot sexy awesome. Or that this might actually be Nadal's year to beat him on something other than clay.

Maybe if I get all the guilt out of the way tonight, it won't ruin the match when I watch it. I mean, I almost never go to church when I'm at school anyway, but somehow that feels less like I'm tempting the fiery wrath of an angry god. Possibly because when I'm at school my mom doesn't know whether I'm going to church or not, allowing her to exist in a quantum state of pride and disappointment.

Fuck Schrodinger's Cat--I'm Schrodinger's Catholic.

Another review rant. Dear reviewer, I do know what I'm talking about
From a just-posted review to one of my fics: Note:
Teen Titan's 'Robin' is Richard Grayson not Timothy Drake. This is in accordance to the continuity of the commic books, the show, and the general consensus of fans.

Um... Note: Teen Titans Robin has been Timothy Drake since 2003 according to comics continuity. And, if you look at ff.net, you will find that I placed my story (gasp!) in the comics section. You see, dear reviewer, besides "Teen Titans Go!" there is another TT comic with a somewhat different team.

Nice to know you polled enough fans to get a general consensus, though. Jerk.

All an Act
I have learned many things from my observations -- how a blind man walks, and how sailor ties a knot -- performances I draw from my repertoire whenever I walk out in disguise. But some things I have learned require no makeup to employ. My brother Mycroft taught me to declaim with such authority that no one will gainsay me, and an undergroom of Lord Lillington's how to stop a runaway horse with no harm to the horse or myself. But when it comes to handling women -- ah, there the trick is simple indeed.

I just pretend my name is John Watson.

Seventeenth Century Flints
I haven't written for a while. I think I've had about five posts I almost wrote and then never actually posted.

Hope everyone having a holiday weekend had a good one. [info]jlh and I went to see Gonzo, which was great--despite the fact that I left the theater COVERED IN BUTTER! (Which I will never stop complaining about.) Then we went to a nice place to eat where we got a nice floor show. A young man apparently out for his first beer picked a fight with a guy at the bar. He was thrown out in the middle of an impassioned speech about the Fourth of July and how we are all the Mets and what else do we really have except that? His friends dragged him out as best they could and the bartender led all of us (an international crowd) in a rousing farewell and good riddance. Yay!

What I've been reading while not posting is Don Quixote, which proves that fandom is always the same. )

Beating that poor, dead research horse again. Yeah, I know.
My name is Fia and I love mpreg.

Okay, a clause to that statement. I love mpreg in fandoms that can accommodate it, through use of magic, alien technologies, unique species quirks or wacky matriarchal parallel universes.

But when you're writing an otherwise 'normal' human pregnancy, notable only in that it is taking place in a male body due to one of the previous kinds of meddling (or something else I haven't listed that can be believed in the context of the fandom) please do a little research into what is 'normal' development in a human pregnancy.

I found out fairly easily, by asking my pregnant best friend, that a normal human fetus first shows signs of movement at 16-25 weeks, which is admittedly quite a wide range. If you don't have one of those at your disposal, you could also check with Wiki or possibly Google "stages of human fetal development" or similar. I'm just saying that your guy's baby probably isn't going to be flailing fit to freak out the physician at three months, is all.

It was a cute fic, for the most part, despite the author retconning some fairly important (I felt) character development (though it's possible the author has not seen the episode in question, which I doubt because they included spoilers for it in the story, complete with very specific spoiler warning.) It's not unusual; sadly most writers in this fandom tend to favor character stagnation over emotional growth in regards to this particular character. Also, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the phrase "more than harmless," meaning -- in context -- "potentially healthful."

In summation, another fairly good story by a good writer, which could have been great. Disappointing. (Also makes me wonder if I'm some kind of a freak for looking things up and asking questions when I'm not an expert -- which is most of the time -- and striving for accuracy whenever possible. I'm actually pretty easy; I would even have accepted a reason -- perhaps something hormonal -- why the baby was roughly a month ahead of itself developmentally.)

This is what happens when I look for slavefic in the Pit....

Dear Author,

Cornelius Fudge has many failings as a person.

However, even with these character flaws it stretches the imagination pantyhose-thin to accept that Cornelius Fudge would connive with Vernon Dursley to enslave, exploit, and sexually abuse Harry Potter for eleven years while keeping up the pretense that he froze on the doorstep of Number 4 Privet Drive on the night Dumbledore left him there.

ETA: Through all the other awful, I completely forgot to mention that it is a Winnie the Pooh cross-over.

Yes. I know.

I share your pain.

Am torn between sitting around online and refreshing Show the Colours some more, because people have been around but there seems to be very little posting (though Sharpie is! *waves*), or watching M&C with Matt, who suggested it. *CACKLES*

I have a new Stephen avatar for StC as well - the one I was using (same as icon) was too abstract and happy and good-looking - I now have this one, which I think captures Stephen's ugly, nerdy, bewildered, "odd-looking civilian in a rusty black coat" side far better, and that is what all the characters are seeing. Thoughts? I have a few more possibilities, but he is so very nerdy in this one. XD

I'm very excited about upcoming spyhat trip to Obidos though - I've already written the climax, because of course it wasn't going to go as simply as all that. *evil laugh* Poor Stephen. Poor Prideaux as well, actually.

Doctor Who: Donna! *sob* CAAN! *SOB* Stephen should be the new companion. Bunnies to this effect will not leave me alone.

"If You Don't Like, Don't Tell Me"
(cross posted to own journal)

Rant the First: I'm beginning to really, really dislike the phrase "if you don't like, don't read!" This is possibly because I'm mostly being told this by fanbrats as a response to my negative critiques/comments/reviews.

It could also be because the phrase...doesn't actually make the sense the writer intends. For instance, I know that if I use the phrase (which I didn't past my first few stories) it means "if you don't like [genre], then don't read [genre]." But when other writers (especially a poor one, or a popular one whose skill isn't all that great) uses the phrase, what they mean is "if you don't like [my writing] don't read [my writing] (and don't tell me about it!)" This is very frustrating, especially when the writer is requesting reviews/critique/comments. Because they're lying.

Rant the Second: So, there is this one fic and from the first chapter onward, there is a Sue who has essentially been inserted into the plot, completely replacing the actual canon character. And it's fairly obvious the reason the character was replaced was because she wanted there to be a romance between her Sue and the canon villain. (It's pretty much stated in the summary that there's going to be a romance between her Sue and the villain.)

People called her on it, and she tried at first to defend the Sue, stating that the Sue had "real emotional problems," and therefore was a full fledged, well rounded character. I point out to her that her Sue was in fact a Sue and would remain a Sue because of her Sue-like qualities such as the ability to make everyone act OOC and all the loving descriptions of her perfection, and the fact that she's replacing the character who was supposed to be there and wasn't. The writer decided to be unusually honest and stated that she didn't care if she was writing a Sue, but the second thing she wrote back seriously annoyed the heck out of me.

She stated that she LIKED the character who had been replaced by her Sue. To me, this makes no sense. Why would you completely remove the canon character from the fic and put your own in his place if you liked him? If I like a character, I write about him/her. If I don't like a character (or if I like a character and know I can't do him/her justice) he/she doesn't show up, or at most gets a cameo.
